A "Warm" Welcome to All our
New Subscribers.
I don't know if you realize this, but today's
marketing tool
is about the Do Not Call Registry. It is something that has
been a long time waiting, and believe it or not, I still
have not put my name on it yet. Go figure. A couple
of weeks ago I had the same Marketing tool. But
because of the popularity of this site, I felt it was
a smart thing to publish it again to remind people
to get to the site, including myself.
Now because of the Do Not Call Registry, people
are now asking for a Do Not Sp*m Registry.
Honestly I think it is a great idea, but if nothing
else is working, why would this. Plus, it is not
honest businesses clogging your email boxes,
it is SC*MS, and if they are low enough to do it
now, why would a Do Not Sp*m Registry help?
But we can keep dreaming.

Don't Forget About
Security
Copyright 2003 Jason Anderson

What would you do if your computer was stolen?
When people talk about security and computers, they
usually
talk about firewalls, anti-virus software, and so on. And
don't get me wrong - all of these things are important.
But few people think about the physical security of
their
computer.
If you run your own Internet business, you should
think
about it seriously.
After all, your computer is probably the most
important
asset for your Internet business (after your mailing list).
It stores all your documents, email, purchased ebooks and
software, etc.
If you haven't thought about security of your home
before,
perhaps you should before it's too late.
The first and most obvious thing to consider is
locks on
your doors and windows. In particular, deadlocks for your
external doors. And remember to lock them whenever you go
out - even if it's just to the shop 2 minutes down the
road! Thieves only need a minute to break in and steal your
valuables.
Having the privacy of tall bushes and high fences
around
your home is great. But if no one can see into your yard,
it means thieves can spend as much time as they want trying
to break in. So consider removing (or at least trimming)
those high bushes.
When you are going out, be sure to make your home
seem
occupied. Leave the TV or radio on, and if it is night (or
you won't be returning until dark), draw the curtains and
turn the lights on.
Think about getting an alarm system for your home.
It's
true; they can be expensive if you get everything at once.
A cheaper option is to buy a basic system that can be
expanded later, and only put sensors in the most important
areas to start with (lounge room, home office, main bedroom
etc).
Most computers can have some sort of security cable
fitted
to them. Laptops usually have a security port in them, as
do some desktop computers. If not, there are several
products you can get to secure your computer to your desk.
Finally, make sure you keep backups of all your
data.
Computers (and other items) can all be replaced - your
documents can't. And don't just keep the backups on a
second hard drive next to your computer - thieves will
probably take that as well! Be sure to keep some backups
off site (at a friend's house for example), and keep them up
to date.
Don't leave it until it's too late to think about
home
security. If you're trying to build up your home business,
the last thing you want is the setback of having all your
equipment and data stolen.

Active Window
An active window is said to be "on top" of other
windows, even
though it may actually be located next to another window.
It's on top due to the fact that all commands are
applied to the
active window, giving it top priority.
If you open a window and then open a second window,
the first
window appears washed out behind the second. This is an inactive
window. The one on top is the active window because it will obey
your commands.

Do Not Call
Here's a long overdue site...it's the web site for
the United States
national "do not call" list. Just register your phone number(s) and
most telemarketers cannot legally call you for the next five years.
I listed my phone numbers, and unless you like
telemarketers,
you'll probably want to register yours. If you do, you'll have to
click
a link in an email they send you to complete the registration.

Neat Browser Tricks
Is your browser up to date? How would you know? By
taking a
peek under its hood, of course. This peeking business applies
to any program on your computer.
To learn more about your browser, click the Help
menu item.
Then click on About. That bit of information will tell you
all you need to know about the program you are curious
about.
You should be using a browser in the 5.0 or 4.7
model range,
or later, if you're using Internet Explorer or Netscape. There
are many other browsers out there, but these are by far the
most popular.
Why use a later model? They're more versatile.
They'll display
pages and the stuff on them easier and faster. And if you're
into printing web pages, Internet Explorer has a great
printing feature that lets you preview your printed page first.
Here are a few tips:
**To open a new browser, hold down the Ctrl key and
press
'N'. A New window will open. You can have a bunch of browser
windows open at the same time.
**To visit a site you've typed into the address bar
in the
past, click the drop down arrow to the right of the address
line. There will be a list of sites there.
**If you remember a site, but can't remember its
address, you
can check your history. IE has a nice history feature. Just
click the History icon to start.
**To pop Internet Explorer open to full screen,
press F11.
Press again to put it back where it was.
There are lots of things you can do with your
browser. The
best thing you can do is explore its features by clicking the
buttons and menu items. Just click and see what happens.
