A warm welcome to all of our New
Subscribers.
Situations occur all of the time that remind of
what it is like to run a home business. For instance:
My son started Cub Scout camp this week. And of
course
the first day or two is the most hectic, getting all the kids,
volunteers, and groups together. A little situation arose,
which I am not going to get into details about, because
I would have to write a book about it. I went to the person in
charge.
I explained the situation, very nicely I might add. Now this
dilemma at hand could have been solved in about 30 seconds,
but the person in charge just happens to be on a power trip.
And instead of being accommodating, she ripped into me
like a psycho. She made up her rules and refused to change
a thing. She has to have been the nastiest person I have dealt
with in a long time. Just so you know, the argument was all
one-sided, because I refused to stoop to her level of outrage,
and remained calm. To make a long story short, I got my way.
But look what I had to go through to get it.
How does this remind me of a home business? Or any
kind of
business? No matter what the situation is, or what your policies are,
there is an etiquette we must maintain. Even if there is no possible
way to accommodate the customer, we must remain professional
and explain WHY it is not possible to make revisions. Now, in my
case, it would not have hurt anyone, nor was it against policies to
accommodate my dilemma. This person has got to be the most
unprofessional person I have ever met, and I can tell you that she
will never have her own online business, because she would NEVER
survive.

In Defense of Innocence

I have watched and read with interest the
commentary in the
e-marketing press about the recent actions taken by the
Federal Trade Commission involving a product known as
Instant Internet Empires.
In my view, in some cases, the commentary has
been
interesting, ghoulish and appalling.
Why do I say this? Well at this stage the claims
made by
the United States are just that, claims.
Yes, a court on an application where only lawyers
for the
United States were heard granted a restraining and cease
and desist order. But the lawyers for the defense were
not heard.
Nobody has heard the defense and yet some of us
are quick
to rush to judgment.
Why? Is it because as marketers we knew
instinctively there
was a problem, or perhaps in reality it is something else -
what I call the rubber neck phenomena - you see it when
people drive by accidents on the road - rubber necks.
At this juncture, all I will say is until the
defense has
been heard, the rule is you are presumed innocent until
proven guilty and it is something which we need to respect,
otherwise the presumption looses all meaning.
Besides, before we mucked up the world with a
plethora of
statutes and regulations, (remember at one time there was
no Income Tax), in a very famous English case, the courts
found statements contained in marketing material don't make
it into the deal, being construed as 'mere puffery', based
on the old adage, buyer beware, you are reading marketing
material, it ain't necessarily true.
Also, we all know, performance is dependent
solely on the
buyer.
My other point, as writers of web copy, we must
familiarize
ourselves with the Truth in A^dvertising Rules and we must
have an understanding of what are the rules of the road.
These rules of the road apply to all of us.
As buyers of Internet marketing products, we must
understand
there is no magic bullet, other than practice, patience,
persistence and testing.
What does this mean?
Simple:
- Like it or lump it the rules apply to all of us
- The rules have been there for some time, the
United States
government having given fair notice it would apply the rules
over a year ago.
- None of us are virgins on this issue, me
included, so let's
all be careful about what we say and write - both concerning
the case in point and generally in how we write our copy and
run our business.
- As part of your training as a marketer, no
matter what
product, good or service you are marketing online, you need
to familiarize yourself with and follow the rules.

want to

'Dot.com disclosure':
Of course, it is also wise to take advantage of
any good
material available on the market to assist you in writing
your copy properly and the related disclaimers.
