THE DARK SIDE OF SP*M FILTERS
or
The Internet Has Become An Old Western Movie Plot
As you read this mentally substitute sp*mster for outlaw.
==================================
 
 
The good citizens of the little town of Cyberspace
were dismayed by the actions of the outlaws.
They didn't want a government, any government,
involved as they were afraid of giving up liberty
or worse yet, being subjected to the taxation
that government cheerfully imposes whenever a
new jurisdiction is obtained.
 
At first, the good citizens suggested that the
townsfolk individually choose which outlaws should be
blocked from the private residences and businesses.
Unfortunately, many of the outlaws would disguise
themselves by changing their email address and
reinvade the town. Appalled that the email prisons
were overflowing with blocked outlaws, the good citizens
decided that more drastic measures were needed.
 
(The good citizens were not elected or chosen by anyone
but themselves. The good citizens are a handful of well
meaning people, a group, a committee, if you will.
They are concerned, alert and vigilant.)
 
The Vigilance Committee determines that individual
townfolk are not effective in keeping outlaws out of
Cyberspace plus the imprisoned outlaw email addresses
are a burden on community resources. Reeking of confidence,
the committee decides to ignore individual liberty
and take the law into it's own hands.
 
Under the cover of darkness, they hire gunslingers
to prevent/filter "suspicious" types from entering the town.
The gunslingers are given total authority and the
power of judge, jury and executioner.
 
A person might be "convicted" because one of 500
or so "suspicious" words was used in a conversation.
Another might have been eliminated because of the
aut*responder that was being ridden into town.
The gunslingers had no mercy. They didn't care if you
were invited by a townsperson or even if you had previously
visited on multiple occasions. (Some of the gunslingers
were lazy and would only interview a certain number of
visitors arriving from any one town. Once the volume quota
was hit later arrivals would have to spend the night outside
the town as they wouldn't be interrogated until the next day.)
 
A few of the gunslingers would send the suspicious types
to a bulk prison where, if a townsperson vouched for them,
they would be released. Unfortunately, most of the
gunslingers eliminated their victims and the bodies were never found.
 
The good citizens, who didn't want a government to infringe
upon their own liberties, seized the basic right of choice
from it's townsfolk. Once in a while a townsperson would
wonder why they hadn't heard from a family member but for
the most part the townsfolk were unaware that the Committee
(Big Brother?) was making their decisions.
 
For those who don't know, many Internet Service Providers
(ISP) have secretly installed what are called sp*m filters
or volume filters. Some of these filters scan (read?)
private email and eliminate messages that contain certain
words like sp*m. (If it had an "a" instead of the "*"
this email would have been eliminated by a gunslinger...er.. filter.)
 
Eliminated messages don't bounce they vanish. Neither
the sender nor receiver knows it happened. Maybe the
grandchild did email a thank you for the birthday present.
Maybe that important email you sent was never received.
Maybe a lot of important and life changing communication
is being filtered.
 
These software filtering programs might have 500 words
or combinations of words that will trigger the vanishing act.
If not stopped there will be more programs using more words.
 
ISPs like to compare themselves to an imaginary,instant,
electronic, free post office. Can you imagine how outraged
you'd be if you found out the postal service was reading
your mail and throwing out what it thought you shouldn't read.
 
I would have thought by now there would have been injunctions
or lawsuits but so far the only reaction I've seen is one
website collecting complaints.

Worst of all, the filters will be bypassed by the sp*msters.
Somebody will build a software program that has all the
magic words and they'll use it like a mutated spell check
before they send anything. Most of the damage inflicted
by the filters will be upon personal mail and legitimate commerce.
 
I'm not naming any specific ISPs, browsers or sellers of
Sp*m filter programs because the situation, while worsening,
is changing every day. If you are concerned about how much
of your privacy is being violated you should check with your ISP.
If you installed a filtering program you might read up on it
and see if you shot yourself in the foot. If you are wondering
if your friends and family are receiving your email,
copy and paste this article into an email and send it.
(If they don't question why you sent this they must not have seen it.)

An image file is just another type of file found on your
computer's hard drive. Image files will have a three letter
"file extension" that tells your operating system (Windows)
what program to use to open that file. The most common
image files have either a ".jpg" or ".gif" file extension. Files
with ".jpg" extensions are usually photographs, but not always.
Files with ".gif" extensions are usually graphics with fewer
colors.
 
Photographs taken with a digital camera are almost always
in .jpg format. They have millions of colors. A typical file
name could be: mounteverest.jpg
 
Image files are different from text, sound, or video files.
Whether you call them "pictures", "graphics", "photos" or
"art", they're an image file.
