Unique Internet Marketing Stands Out From The Crowd

Several years ago, I went whale watching in Bar Harbor,
Maine, while on vacation.  I remained in the large, central
cabin with my poor seasick infant son when a whale was
finally spotted.
 
The Captain announced, "Whale to the starboard", and a
mini-stampede of about 70 tourists scampered over just in
time for the briefest of glimpses as it quickly submerged
again.  Everyone jostled and jockied for position to get the
perfect camera shot for when that darn whale resurfaced.
 
But of course, it wasn't going to work out this way.  "Whale
to the port side", announced the Captain, and the stampede
to the other side literally tipped the boat.  Naturally, the
whale had disappeared by then as well.
 
This went on like this -- back and forth -- for about twenty
minutes.  The whale seemed to be toying with human
nature -- the tendency for people to do what everyone else
was doing.
 
And EVERYONE was zigging when they should have been zagging.
There were no 'individuals'.  They moved as a group in their
futile quest to snap off a clear and revealing shot.
 
Are you moving with the crowd on the internet, or are you
striking out on your own unique path, one more likely to get
noticed?
 
If you observe your own specific internet marketplace, it's
very likely you'll find that the vast majority of the
'crowd' are doing the same things in the same ways -- and
they're also getting the same poor results.
 
This presents a golden opportunity to be noticed by doing
things differently.
 
Successful entrepreneurs, both online and off, are
innovators and risk takers.  They *experiment*, *evaluate*
and *evolve* until they successfully convey that both who
they are and what they offer is unique in the marketplace,
despite all the competition.
 
To separate yourself from the pack, you need to look at
every aspect of your internet marketing effort and ask
yourself, "What's unique about this?"  And, "How does this
contribute to my own unique web presence?"
 
Here's some important areas to look at to get you started.
 

*   Are you playing it safe and trying to please and sell
everyone, and consequently selling to almost no one?
 
*   Why should your prospects believe YOU when they are
skeptical of so many others?
 
*   How about your ezine?  Is it similar to countless others
or is there a unique theme or tone running through it?
 
*   While your ads may be well written, is the overall
message very much the same as the pack?
 
*   How is your sales page unique?  And have you given it a
measured dose of your own personality?
 

This process of developing a distinct 'uniqueness' is
subjective, involves risks, takes work to implement, and
time to evaluate and change again if necessary.  But in
doing so, you will develop the factors crucial to
successfully setting yourself apart in a very competitive
marketplace.
 
Back onboard, my wife took a chance and went to the OTHER
SIDE of the boat, alone.  Sure enough, the whale popped up
for a few seconds, she got the shot, and that was the last
that was seen of that whale, or any other, for the rest of
the trip.  There were alot of unhappy tourists grumbling on
the way back.
 
Stand out from the crowd.  Move to the empty side of the
boat -- and you'll stand a much better chance of getting
your picture of the whale.

A warm welcome to all of our New Subscribers.
 
What's going on with AOL?  Last week we discussed
the rumor going around that anyone who has a mailing
list with more than 100 AOL subscribers can be in big
trouble.  Supposedly AOL has set up a filter that
allows only 100 AOL recipients to receive a particular mailing.
No one else on the list will receive it.  They will not
be bounced, they will just be sent out somewhere into
cyberspace.  Though some of our AOL subscribers have commented
that they too have trouble sending out multiple emails to
their AOL friends, it cannot be confirmed that this filter
is actually in existence. 
 
I have concluded, that as far as we know, this is still just
a rumor.  Though I predict some major problems with this in
the near future, I feel that this problem is not a major issue
at the time.
 
My opinion about AOL, is that people using an AOL account
should consider another source.  AOL is great for the newbies.
Ok for surfing and chatting with friends, and that is about it.
I was too an AOL'er.  I did not want to get rid of AOL, but
when I did, I was so relieved, and found that there is nothing
spectacular about AOL.  Sure the IM feature is great, but you
do not have to have AOL to have the IM feature.  I have AOL
IM, and it is FREE.  In fact, I wish I had gotten rid of AOL a long,
long time ago. With all the problems with signing on and then
staying on, and now with all the problems with their filters, ugggh!
Plus, the fact that they do not support any html in their emails,
makes AOL not as GREAT as they think they are.
 
If you feel not having AOL is the end of the world, then you need
to step out of the AOL bubble and see what you are missing. 
AOL can do damage to a business.  If you are on AOL for the chatrooms,
then fine.  But if you are on AOL because of the other features,
well, try another ISP, and then you will see how many MORE features
are available to you.  AOL is very limited, you just don't know it.

All About Modems
 
More people have regular old modems than have fancy cable
modems, although the cable market grows daily. The next few
tips explain the modulate-demodulating world of the modem in
simple terms anyone can understand. And whether your
modem is internal or external, it works the same.
 
# Modem is actually an acronym for "Modulate-Demodulate."
See the MODEM in there? Now you know. A modem changes
digital signals (ones and zeros) into sound waves, and back to
digital again.
 
# A modem's main purpose is to connect one computer to
another computer using a telephone line. They're just a little
better than two cans on a string, but use the same basic
principles, with of course a more souped up ability.
 
# Your e-mail travels at the speed of your modem between
your computer and your mail server. "Your mail server" actually
refers to the computer that's hosting your e-mail account.
 
# Your computer has to dial another computer's phone number
before you can do anything on the Net. If you get a busy
signal, this means all the modems in the modem pool are being
used.
 
# Internet service providers have to install rooms full of
modems. These are called modem pools, or modem banks. It's
an expensive undertaking. You might want to ask a potential
provider what their modem to user ratio is. The lower the
better, which means you'll get less busy signals.
 
# Cable modems are fantastic because they free up your
phone, are always on, and are super fast. It's the newest way
to connect. Cable modems use the same cable that a cable
TV set uses. Yep, that's right. No extra cables, no adapters,
nothing. Just the cable and a cable modem.
