Techniques for Boosting Repeat Visits to Your Web Site

Traffic. It's the Holy Grail for most web sites.  There are
two kinds of traffic: Virgin and Repeat.  Most articles
talk about getting new visitors to your site - the Virgin
traffic.  You've probably read about search engine
optimization, popularity linking, mini-sites, web
advertising, etc.  They're all great tactics for getting
Virgin traffic.
 
But what happens if that new visitor doesn't buy from you
the first time they visit?  Do you have techniques to make
them a Repeat visitor?  It may be more important than you
think.
 
If you are trying to sell something directly from your
site, you know that only a small fraction of your visitors
actually buy.  Did you ever stop to think of why that might
be the case?  Consider this.  Some will never buy from you
and others just haven't bought yet.  Maybe they're a little
short of cash right now.  Maybe they got distracted.  Maybe
they're the type of person that carefully considers every
purchase. Maybe they need to see a sales pitch a few times
first.  Maybe the just weren't in the "buying mood" during
that visit.
 
This illustrates the importance of doing whatever you can
to generate repeat visitors.  You need to make it easy for
people to come back to your site when the mood strikes.
It's really quite a simple idea. If you are spending
valuable time and money trying to generate traffic to your
site, you should also spend some time on repeat traffic.
 
There are several techniques out there to help generate
repeat traffic.  The simplest is to remind people to
bookmark your site.  You've probably seen this a million
times as you've surfed around.  And that's one of the
problems with it.  It is overexposed.  You see it so much,
it almost becomes invisible; like many banner ads.  Even if
you are successful in getting someone to bookmark your
site, you are still buried in what is probably a long list
of bookmarks.  How can you stand out?  Will they ever see
you again?  What will remind them to visit?  These are all
weaknesses of the bookmarking tactic.  Nevertheless, it is
usually worthwhile to implement this simple change.  For
the sake of a couple of minutes, you may generate some
extra repeat traffic.
 
The tactic that gets by far the most exposure is offering
some type of free report or newsletter so that you can
capture the email address of the visitor.  Once you have
that, you can put your message in front of them as often as
they will let you, with links back to your site.
 
There are literally thousands of articles, ebooks, web
sites and special marketing reports that provide many ideas
on implementing this strategy. And it is a good one.
People are raking in millions of dollars by building lists
and using them for marketing purposes.  But that subject
has been covered ad nauseum.
 
I'd like to tell you about a new technique that has been
used and proven by the biggest names in software.
Companies like Microsoft, Quicken and AOL have been using
it for years to gain huge market share over their
competitors.  Fortunately, the technology to enable this
marketing strategy is now available to any web marketer.
 
How do these companies get millions of people to visit
their web sites and buy their products and services?  How
do they make it so easy to get repeat visitors? What have
they been doing that you haven't?
 
They put icons and links to their web sites on the user's
desktop.  You've certainly seen them on your own PC,
haven't you?  Those links to AOL and MSN that magically
appear when you boot up or press the Start button.  Imagine
the millions of PCs that have those links.
 
Now imagine one of your own on the desktops of people who
visit your web site.  You can make this happen.  And it is
technically very easy.  Now visitors to your web site can
click on a link that immediately places your icon and web
site link onto their desktops.
 
But there is a big difference between those AOL and MSN
links and your link on the user's desktop.  The user wants
your link there.  They never asked for the AOL or MSN link
- those were installed by the PC manufacturer or the OS
provider.  But you are giving visitors a choice to easily
install your icon and link.  So they are much more likely
to use it!
 
Why would a visitor do this?  Because they want to come
back.  And they want to make it easy on themselves.  Let's
face it.  It is hard to remember every site you visited and
which of them are worth visiting again.  So if your site
was interesting to them, and they want to visit again to
reconsider your offer, they will be happy to take a few
seconds to make it easy on themselves.
 
There's another nice benefit to this technique.  Your icon
and the shortcut text under it serve as a constant
reminder of your marketing message.  So not only is your
web site just a click away, but you are making impressions
on the user every time they look at their desktop.
 
In summary, if you are working to generate traffic to your
web site, don't put all your effort on the Virgins.
Consider using new techniques to make it easy for the
Repeat visitors to come back and buy from you when they are
ready.  You'll see a profitable payoff from these efforts.

A rumor is in the air about AOL. 
AOL won't give any info on this, so maybe one of our subscribers
can give us some insight on it.
 
It has been reported to me that AOL is now limiting email from
any one given source to 100 emails into their system.

only 100 will be delivered. The other 5,900 will be bounced.

Because the email is just dumped into a cyberspace

And we have no idea which 100 either! 
 
Is this TRUE? There are no known facts as of yet.  I would

Reduce the space needed in the 'Size' box
 
Repeat the procedure with 'Icon Spacing Vertical'.
 
With trial and error you'll be amazed at the amount of space
you can save this way.
 
Now you'll have plenty of room on your desktop for your
coffee and sandwiches!

make it clear how you use all their techie stuff. Which is just
