Not a Spammer, You Say?

Just recently a fellow publisher decided that it was now time to
put her ezine online, because of fear that it was being "spam
filtered". And to make matters even worse she found out from her
own ISP. Upon sending out her ezine, she in turn sent herself a
copy, only to find out it was considered to be "spam".

Now imagine that, here you are running an ethical ezine, have
been in business for a number of years and in one day your
business is shot down the tubes! All because of a piece of
software, that has marked ezines as being the "plague"! Including
YOURS! Don't think so? Maybe what I have to say might make you
understand.

I decided today that I would give Spam Killer the "test" which
was recently acquired by McAfee. Being someone familiar with e-
mail etc. I found it to be fairly easy to use, but for some of
our "newbies" online, one false move ... someone is getting
falsely reported! All for the wrong reasons. There are no two
ways about it, in the wrong hands this piece of software is any
publishers WORST nightmare!

So, here is how it works, emails are filtered as being spam,
dependent on the subject line, from field and by their content.
And they have even done us all a "favor" and picked out a few of
their own favorites. Then the "offending message" is scanned and
if it contains any of the words or phrases in question it is what
they call "killed". (I should also mention that it can be
configured to automatically be reported to the "offending
parties" abuse department.)

Now just to give you an idea of what they consider to be spam
here are just a few words:

Anybody, Anyone, Bizop, Casino, Credit, Everybody, Friend, Hot
deals, Money, Remove, Stealth, Success, winner, plus a whole
whack of domains and 100% free, Accept Credit Cards, Apply now,
Apply today, banner impressions, banner exchange, explode your
business, Financial Freedom, Free gift, Free info, Free offer,
free membership, free upgrade, home business, home based
business, income from home, information you requested.

Oh and let's not forget internet marketer or limited time offer!
Plus about 500 other words and phrases. To be honest you would
have to download the free 30 day trial version to fully
understand the ramifications of this. And I don't know about you,
but just the use of a few of those words above, has shot my
business right down the tube!

My impression, is that we publishers are being picked on.
Although you CAN add your publishers address to your "friend
list" to ensure it doesn't get blocked out, it isn't the point!
People are LAZY and can you honestly tell me that they're all
going to take the time to do this? Let's be realistic, they
won't.

To also add to my findings, I put 100 of the ezines that I
subscribe to through the test. I forwarded each one of them to
myself from a different address and EVERY single one of them
FAILED! So the REAL question is, what are we going to do about
it? Because enough is enough and we all thought Spam Cop was our
worst nightmare, they've got nothing on this!

"No More Re-Typing Your Favorite URLs"
==============================================

We all have a few favorite Websites which we return to now
and again. So let's make it super easy for you to visit again.
This shows you how to make a push button link to our site, or
any site at all, or to any page within a site.

Internet Explorer users:

1. Open Browser. On the Menu line, (Top Toolbar)
click View. Hover your mouse over 'Toolbars', and be sure
that 'Links' is checked in drop down menu. On right hand side
of your top tool bar you will now see a 'Links' button.

2. Visit a web page. When you're at the site you want to
create the Link button for, put your mouse cursor on the
blue "e" or the icon next to the URL (the www stuff) and
click, hold down the mouse button, and drag the URL out
of the address bar, and drop it over the 'Links' button.

Click on the >> bit at the side of the 'Links' button, and you'll
see that a new link has appeared in the drop down list, with
the page title listed.

3. Change the title! If it's too long, or doesn't say what
you want it to say, RIGHT click the link button, and select
Rename. Type the name you want for this button, and click
OK. It's renamed!

To visit the site next time you're on-line, just click the
button... and the page loads. You don't have to type
anything!

Netscape users:

There's a link icon to the left of the location field. Drag
this link and drop it to create a link button. The principles
are the same between the two browsers, but the details are
a bit different. To rename a link, go to Window > Bookmarks >
Edit Bookmarks. RIGHT click the bookmark you want to work
with, and select Properties.

Type in a new name, click OK, close the window, and you're
done. It's a bit more involved with Netscape, but like
anything, once you've done it a few times it's old hat.

Those techies sure are clever. Of course they don't always
make it clear how you use all their techie stuff. Which is just
as well, or The Newbie Club wouldn't exist:-)
