It's been said that 85% of the population would love to start
their own business - but are afraid of losing the money.
 
But, with so many internet businesses costing less than $100 a
month and with so much free, or almost free, advertising around,
there's very little excuse.
 
$100 a month is about $25 a week or about $3.50 a day.
Can you find that?
 
Take a close look at your expenditure to see where you can make
cut-backs. How about one less evening out? One less 'little
luxury'? More canny shopping? Keeping a closer look-out for
supermarket deals? You get the idea!
 
Most people can put up with cut-backs if they can see this
leading to a much better standard of living!
 
Have a look in your basement or attic! See what's there that you
haven't used for years. Garden furniture, toys, ornaments,
sports equipment, books, videos.... the list is endless.
 
Dig them out, clean them up if they need some TLC and have a
garage sale or take them to a flea market. Don't forget, what's
useless junk to you can be treasure to someone else!
 
Another way to get that extra money is to find a second job.
If you look around you may well find work you can do for a
couple of hours one or two evenings a week, or at weekends.
If it gets you the money you need to start your own business,
wouldn't it be worth it in the end?
 
If you genuinely want to get your own business, you'll find a
way to raise the cash.

A warm welcome to all of our New Subscribers.
 
Today is September 11, 2002.  One year after
our nation's most tragic event.  I remember one year
ago, sitting at my computer, working as usual, and
an Instant Message came through from my business
partner, Sara.  She told me to turn on the TV
right away.  A plane just went into the World Trade
Center.  As soon as the TV was turned on, the news was
blaring about the incident.  It did not take long
at all to realize that America was under Attack by
terrorists. The rest became a blur
as we watched these tragic events unfold. I ran to
school to pick up my son.  I needed him with me, for
we had no idea what was to happen next.
 
From that day on, The United States of America has
never been the same.  The word Freedom now has a new
definition.  Though the events of that horrible day last
year has brought alot of loss and heartache, it has also
made us stronger, brought our nation closer together,
and has restored our belief in what our country means to us.
 
With the country under orange alert, I know many of us
will be going about the day with a fear in us.  Just
believe and be positive.  Have faith and be cautious.

Real Stories of the Non-Technical 
 
-I called a company and asked to speak to Bob. The person who
answered said, "Bob is on vacation. Would you like to hold?"
 

-I worked with an individual who plugged their power strip back
into itself and for the life of them could not understand why
their computer would not turn on.
 

-"Do you know anything about this fax-machine?"
 
"A little. What's wrong?"
 
"Well, I sent a fax, and the recipient called back to say all she
received was a cover-sheet and a blank page. I tried it again,
and the same thing happened."
 
"How did you load the sheet?"
 
"It's a pretty sensitive memo, and I didn't want anyone else to
read it by accident. So I folded it so only the recipient could
open it and read it."
 

-I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car.
"Do you need some help?" I asked.
 
"I knew I should have replaced the battery in this remote control
door unlocker. Now I can't get into my car. Do you think that
store would have a battery for this?"
 
"Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm, too?" I asked.
 
"No, just this remote," she answered, handing it and the car keys
to me.
 
As I took the keys and manually unlocked the door, I said, "Why
don't you drive over there and check about the batteries? It's a
long walk."
 

-Tech Support: What does the screen say now? Caller: It says 'Hit
ENTER when ready.' Tech Support: Well? Caller: How do I know when
it's ready?
 

-A man moved to New Mexico and called his credit company to
change his address. When he told the girl where he was moving,
she told him that she couldn't help him since they didn't issue
cards outside of the United States!
 

-My friend called his car insurance company to tell them to
change his address from Texas to Vermont. The woman who took the
call asked where Vermont was. As he tried to explain, she
interrupted and said, "Look, I'm not stupid or anything, but what
state is it in?"
 

-Several years ago, we had an intern who was none too swift. One
day, he was typing and turned to a secretary and said, "I'm
almost out of typing paper. What do I do?"
 
"Just use copier machine paper," she told him.
 
With that, the intern took his last remaining blank piece of
paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five blank
copies.
 

-One of our servers crashed. I was watching our new system
administrator trying to restore it. He inserted a CD and needed
to type a path name to a directory named "i386."
 
He started to type it and paused, asking me, "Where's the key for
that line thing?"
 
I asked what he was talking about, and he said, "You know, that
one that looks like an upside-down exclamation mark."
 
I replied, "You mean the letter 'i'?"
 
And he said, "Yeah, that's it!"
 

-I was in a car dealership a while ago when a large motor home
was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire
need of repair and the whole thing generally looked like it had
been an extra in "Twister." I asked the manager what had
happened. He told me that the driver had set the cruise control,
and then went in back to make a sandwich.

System Freeze Ups
 
If your system freezes, it is usually one application currently
running that is causing the problem. If you depress the Ctrl
key, the Alt key and the Delete key all at the same time the Task
Manager will show you what is running. You can usually close
applications from this screen, which will many times solve the
problem.
 
If you depress the Ctrl key, the Alt key and the Delete key all
at the same time again, the computer will restart.
 
If your only recourse is to turn off your computer and then
turn it back on, scandisk runs but seldom finds anything wrong.
 
While this is a pain, it is a good idea to run scandisk after a
bad shutdown. You can however disable this and Microsoft has
made it easy to do so.
 
Go to Start|Run and type in msconfig, and depress "Enter". When
the system configuration utility opens, select the general tab
and click the "Advanced" button. Check "Disable Scandisk after
Bad Shutdown". Hit OK and restart (reboot) your computer when
prompted.
 
You should however run Scandisk periodically to ensure the
general health of your computer.
