One of my favorite "silent partner" methods of attaining
website traffic is the startpage program. Using most
startpage services requires you to go from page-to-page
by your own efforts, clicking the continue or next
page button.
 
Some are set up to automatically do the surfing for you.
These are good for increasing your website stats, and
hopefully, there is a face sitting behind that screen
looking at the sites as they rush by.
 
Which leads me to my purpose in writing today... Popups!
 
Popups work, in SMALL doses. By small, of course I mean
ONE popup asking for my permission to subscribe me to
your newsletter or mailing list. That's "okay."
 
TWO begin to get on my nerves. Go over two, and you've
succeeded in really ticking me off.
 
And, I'm not alone in feeling this way.
 
If I have to fight with your website, really get in there
and duke it out closing your popups, frankly you are NEVER
going to get me to buy anything from you, read your web
site, sign up, join this or that, etc.
 
ZIP, ZILCH, NADA! You've just lost a sale.
 
And, it won't just be me you are losing as a potential
customer for I feel I am voicing the thoughts of billions
around the globe (other than those that are inflicting
this upon the rest of us).
 
It's senseless. Here someone has gone to great lengths
to create their website and then shoots themselves in
the foot!
 
Maybe they weren't thinking when they joined 10 programs
demanding that in return for a link they had to put an
enter or exit popup on their own website.
 
ONE of those programs is enough. Running more than one
exit or enter popup exchange is suicide for your sales.
 
Don't be fooled by the "if you only just add our exit
popup to your page your traffic will increase by hundreds
of thousands!"
 
Yes and no.
 
While your STATS may look good, you've just ticked off
most of the population of the planet to never do business
with you - ever.
 
So, if your purpose WAS to tick me off - you've succeeded.
If it wasn't, and you really wanted me to see what you
have to offer - set a limit, and that limit is ONE!
 
Use the "real estate" that ONE popup offers for YOURSELF.
Use an autoresponder and ask for the surfers information.
Seek PERMISSION to email them in the future.
 
Friendly and quick... and who knows I just might stick
around long enough to see what you have to offer :)

A collection of programs that enables you to store, modify, and
extract information from a database. There are many different
types of DBMSs, ranging from small systems that run on personal
computers to huge systems that run on mainframes. The following
are examples of database applications:
* computerized library systems
* automated teller machines
* flight reservation systems
* computerized parts inventory systems
 
From a technical standpoint, DBMSs can differ widely. The terms
relational, network, flat, and hierarchical all refer to the way
a DBMS organizes information internally. The internal
organization can affect how quickly and flexibly you can extract
information.
 
Requests for information from a database are made in the form of
a query, which is a stylized question. For example, the query
 
SELECT ALL WHERE NAME = "SMITH" AND AGE > 35
 
requests all records in which the NAME field is SMITH and the AGE
field is greater than 35. The set of rules for constructing
queries is known as a query language. Different DBMSs support
different query languages, although there is a semi-standardized
query language called SQL (structured query language).
Sophisticated languages for managing database systems are called
fourth-generation languages, or 4GLs for short.
 
The information from a database can be presented in a variety of
formats. Most DBMSs include a report writer program that enables
you to output data in the form of a report. Many DBMSs also
include a graphics component that enables you to output
information in the form of graphs and charts.
