To anyone with kids of any age, or anyone who has ever been a kid,
here's some advice Bill Gates recently dished out in a high school
speech about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school.

He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created
a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept
set them up for failure in the real world.

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this!

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world
will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about
yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school.
You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough ... wait till you get
a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.
Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping ...
they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault,
so don't whine about your mistakes ... learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring
as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and ... listening to you talk about how cool
you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites
of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers ...
but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades
and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer.
This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off
and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself.
Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually
have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

"File Compression"

Oh my, what a boring topic to write about. Who gives a
flying flip about compressing files? And besides, why bother
with this stuff anyway?

Well- assuming you download anything new to your computer
- you'll no doubt come across a "zip file".

That's simply techie-talk for taking a file and squeezing the
space out of it, making it smaller. And smaller files mean
less time moving them across the Internet.

When you see "pictures.zip" you know a couple of things. 1)
The file is compressed, and 2) it contains pictures.

Let's say you have taken some digital photos and want to
send them to someone... doing so one by one would take a
long time. But if you were to zip them up into a "zip file"...
they'd be compressed and all in the same package together.
You could then send that single package off by email to
whoever you wish.

In order to unzip, or un-compress a zip file, you must have
some software installed on your computer that knows how to
unzip. There's a little note below that talks about "unzipping
with confidence". Follow the link, and learn more about the
Unzip Wizard. And you'll know more about file compression,
too.

For the more technically minded, here's some copy from the
Unzip Wizard site that explains things rather nicely ( or visit
the site at <http://newbieclub.com/wizard> ):

File compression is like a kind of computer shorthand. When
you attempt to compress a file, the compression software that
is being used looks for a series of repeating characters or bits
in the file. The software then replaces these blocks of
repeated characters with symbols or shorter words or phrases,
which are called 'tokens'.

For example, it takes less space for a computer file to be
structured:

"10101000110101[insert 73 zeroes here]11011010010"

than this...

"1010100011010100000000000000000000000000000000000
000000000000000000000000000000000000011011010010"

When you apply a decompression program to a compressed
file, the software reads the file and replaces the tokens with
the original data, inflating the file back to its original size.

And that's how it works. As long as you have software that
will handle the unzipping chore, you've got it made.

probably bombarded on a daily basis with spam
emails containing a download. Well, it is more
than likely that these downloads contain a virus.
And there are tons and tons of viruses circulating
the internet. It is never ending. Be smart and
never download anything at all! Even if it is an email
from a friend. You are probably asking, "why can't I
download a file from a friend?" Well, this is why...
because it is possible your friend or colleague never
sent you the download. It could be a virus attached
and they may have sent it without realizing what they did.
So before you download it, check with them and make sure
they did attach something. Better safe then sorry.

Whenever I have to attach something to an email, I let
the person know I am attaching something. That way they
know that it is not a virus.

I would also like to make you aware of HOW The OnLine Exchange
works. Never, and I mean NEVER will we send you ANYTHING
with an attachment. If you do receive something from us
with an attachment, it is likely that someone is forging
our email address. Believe it or not, these wacko's know
how to do that too. Someone could be using your email address
and spreading viruses all over the place, without you even
knowing about it.

Viruses are no joking matter. They can wipe out your whole
computer. So be prepared and be safe! Make sure you
have virus detection and repair software on your computer, and make
sure it is enabled at all times. That way, if you do get
a virus, it will detect it and fix it. A good one that
I use is:
