Prescription for Doing Business In A War Economy

I'm up late on a Sunday night. I've written several drafts of my
newsletter this past week, but I'm just not happy with giving you
a few Internet marketing tips this week. Something else in
gnawing away at my heart.

The events of these past few weeks have changed the way we will
do business together in the days ahead. If you're like me, you
have to be asking yourself, "Will the business I build today even
be around in the months ahead?" Many businesses once strong and
successful have gone under. Things are changing so fast both
online and offline.

In times like these, the terrorist attack on the World Trade
Center, the Stock Market re-opening to a 1000 point drop, a
million people being laid off every month this year, and the
U.S. about to go to war, what should our business strategy be?

By nature, I am a very confident and optimistic person. I would
be the one that would swim out to Moby Dick with tarter sauce. :-)
I do believe that things will get better and that we will one
day be back to a prosperous economy, but that day is not today.

We will recover. Our nation will be stronger. But some tough
times may be ahead. To survive in war economy you must be
willing to work harder and smarter. To put things in perspective,
I want to remind you that after WWII, our economy was in a
recession for 10 months, and after the war in Vietnam, our
economy was in a recession for 16 months. I expect our economy
to bounce back within 12 months.

Here is my prescription for doing business in a war economy.

1. Stay the course. Continue to build your business. Be smart
and have a business plan for you to follow. You need a
written plan so you can see your progress on paper. This is
not the time to let your emotions rule your business decisions.
Know your bottom line.

2. Network with other businesses. Take the time to develop some
strategic relationships with others in your industry. Find
other like minded business people to work with.

3. Take the time to position your business in front of your
targeted marketplace. The slow down on the Internet means
that everyone is in the same boat. Now is the time to be
positioning your business, not when the market is at its peak.

4. Save some money. Take the time to discover what is working
on the Internet. Ready cash will come in handy when cash-
strapped companies run into trouble. Look for good deals.

5. Trade services when possible. You will be surprised at the
opportunities available to you both online and offline in
today's economy.

6. Give to those who need help. This is a basic principle. Give
and it will be given unto you. If your company is in the
position to help those who have had their lives destroyed
in New York and Washington do so with a cheerful heart.

I'm personally going to give away 10% of my paid subscriptions
and paid advertisements to the children who lost their parents
in these Terrorist attacks. This is one way that I can see to help
with the relief effort. If you are thinking about being a paid
subscriber or running an ad in my newsletter, now is a good
time to do it. You will help the victim's families, and you
will be helping yourself with an excellent marketing resource.

7. Don't take yourself so seriously. Spend some quality time
with those who you love. It is always a good time to check up
on the things that money can't buy.

Need to weed out some old files, but don't want to go file
by file, searching for the ones that are older than a few months?
Put the Date tab of the Find feature to work.

Click Start, Find, Files and Folders. Choose the Date tab,
and enter a date that's a couple of months back. Then click
the Find button. You'll discover everything that meets
your date criteria. You may even find stuff that you
can safely delete, and free up some hard drive space.
If you don't recognize a filename, it's best to leave it alone.
