404 Now Found - Are You Losing Traffic ?

As a webmaster, there are many things you have to learn
and manage these days. You are probably working really
hard on getting traffic to your web site!
No matter how hard you try to avoid this, sooner or later
someone will misspell a URL to your web page or try to
access a page that you have deleted. Viola! The visitor
gets a 404 Not Found Error and you may have lost them
for good.
You've seen it happen, right ?
As if losing your visitor/prospect/customer wasn't enough,
search engines are relentless with 404 Not Found errors.
That bad link could stay listed for months, which reflects
badly on you.
If you knew that it would take you less then 1 minute to
save this visitor/prospect/lead/customer, would you allow
me 1 minute of your time to show you how ?

I will show you how this will work if your web site is hosted
on a Unix/Linux server (most are).
First, there are many different error pages that your visitor
could encounter. Here are the most common:
400 - Bad Request
401 - Authorization Required
403 - Forbidden
404 - Page Not Found
500 - Internal Server Error
So how do you turn these error pages into viable web pages ?
Open up a text editor like Notepad.
Copy the following lines into your empty text document:
ErrorDocument 400 http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/404.html
ErrorDocument 401 http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/401.html
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/403.html
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/404.html
ErrorDocument 500 http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/500.html
Replace YOURDOMAIN.com with your domain name!
Save this text document as: .htaccess (Note: the DOT
before htaccess) Make sure you don't save it as htaccess.txt!
You can now create different pages for different errors,
or you can make one page for all of them.
I usually copy and paste my HTML code from my main
page into my text editor and use the "Save As" function
to save the file five different times with five different
names, exactly as follows:
404.html
401.html
403.html
404.html
500.html
This way no matter what error occurs, the visitor always
comes back to my main page. I am just lazy when it
comes to server maintenance :)
Now to the final step:
Upload your .htaccess and your 5 html pages to your web
server's root directory - folder public_html or www. If you
are unsure about which is the root directory, ask the tech
support at your hosting company.
Make sure you upload them as text files and not binary!
Try now to go to your domain and misspelled index.html,
for example. http://www.yourdomain.com/indwx.html
:)
You should now be taken to your error page that you just
put up. If you copied your main page source code as an
error page you will see your main page instead of 404
NOT FOUND!
You may have just saved your best marketer/customer or
friend - who knows!
If you are experienced, you probably want information
on where the person came from, where the 404 page
is listed, so you would probably use SSI - Server Side
Includes. If you do, remember to name all with .shtml
extensions, not html.
