          START YOUR OWN PERSONAL LOG

Are you one of those people who seems to find that there
are never enough hours in the day, and that you just can't
get ahead of the work that *needs* to be done?

You are not alone, particularly if your day to day tasks
are centered around your home, either in the form of a home
based business, volunteer activities, or a need to add more
to your life than just coping with the day to day basics.

Time and motion studies would tell us that it all boils
down to organization. However, very few time and motion
studies were created around situations where a washing
machine might suddenly flood the laundry, a neighbor calls
in with a cherry cake and the need to cry on your shoulder,
or the phone goes crazy with one telemarketing firm after
another trying to sell you a whole pile of things you have
never heard of, and for which you have no wish for
enlightenment.

No, what is needed is a different approach. And one of the
best tools you can use in this situation is a personal log.

Now most of us are familiar with keeping a log of trips we
make in the car, particularly if we are able to claim some
of this travel against our taxation expenses.

Take this a step further and develop a personal log for
you, and instead of trips, record progress towards a goal
you want to achieve.

I first discovered this trick many years ago, when I
started out in the writing business, sending of material to
editors, and collecting rejection slips.

I began to keep a log of each new piece that I sent out.
One reason was to keep track of where my material was, but
the other was to give me an overview of how much I was
accomplishing each month.

Note the word *month*. To be successful, your log needs to
take in a much longer time frame than a day or a week.

Suppose, for example, you have set yourself the goal of
reading a book on personal development. You could of
course, set yourself the target of reading a chapter a day.
But then you get three days in a row when you just can't
get near that book. You're so far behind you know you'll
never catch up, and the project dies.

What if, however, you simply grab each opportunity to read
as it arises? You read one, two, three pages, or whole
chapters. And when you're done, you note this in the log
you've set up for this project.

At the end of the month you total up the pages you have
ready, and suddenly you have something here in black and
white that provides an indication of accomplishment.

But your personal log does something more. It provides you
with a target for the next month, as you strive to better
that previous figure.

Adapt the log to suit your circumstances.  If you're trying
to diet, keep a log that details every healthy low fat meal
you eat. Review this at the end of the month. You'll
probably be surprised at how well you've done, and that in
itself will spur you to put a better figure down next
month.

Remember that your personal log is just for you. It's not
there to impress anyone else. There's no point in fudging
the figures. The only person you're cheating on is
yourself.

Use your personal log if your goal is to make sales calls
each day. Instead of setting targets and failing to meet
them, simply log each of the calls you make. When you
review it at the end of the month, you have a figure you
can look to improve on for the coming month.

Which brings us to the final, and possibly most important
aspect of keeping that personal log. As the figures go down
against each day's date, you'll find yourself looking for
those extra moments that you can snatch to perform one more
task so that you can add it to that day's total.

In short, you're developing your own system of managing
time, one that works around your circumstances, and one
that, because of this, is likely to be far more successful
in the long run.
